Medical student Rotation and Elective Information

Schedule

The ER schedule can be accessed on the ER Schedule page. You will have been assigned a "colour" which represents your shift line for your rotation.

Each student is expected to complete 14 shifts per 4 week block of ER. You will have a mix of shifts. You will be expected to work nights and weekends, just as we do. 

Covid-19 and Medical Students

The ED deals with undifferentiated patients and it is not always positive to know covid status based off triage assessment or our initial assessments. UBC has changed their guidance for medical students on rotations. There are no longer restrictions on students seeing covid-19 patients in the ED. Please remember to don and doff PPE appropriately at all times.

Please see the Orientation Page to complete the necessary modules prior to starting your rotation/elective.

ER Classroom

Residents are required to complete assignments during their rotation. Students are not required but if you are interested in some of the educational content available, please see the ER Classroom page. 

Evaluation

At the end of each shift, you are responsible for having an end of shift feedback form filled out by the staff physician you worked with. These are now accessed via One45. During your shift please generate an evaluation form on the One45 site for your staff to fill out after the shift is done.

Leaves and Protected Time

All academic half day sessions are protected. Throughout the year, students are also granted protected time for exam prep, portfolio sessions, etc. If you are scheduled for a shift during these times, please let Carol or Deanna know. 

You are required to complete a minimum of 75% of your rotation to pass the rotation—this works out to be 11 shifts. If you miss more than 4 shifts in a rotation block it will be necessary to reschedule shifts to make your 75% requirement. Please follow UBC policy and submit the appropriate documentation to the clerkship admin in the case of a missed shift.
